Medisoft V21 should be available soon for your healthcare\physician back office this year, in 2016.  This new version will have features to help improve the revenue cycle management of your practice and help improve the medical and insurance billing functions of your clinic or office.

An available option for Medisoft Version 21 is Encoder Pro that helps with the medical coding of ICD-10 diagnosis codes and CPT procedure codes.  You can search using common terms or clinical terms, then pull that information back into Medisoft.  You can also cross code from ICD9 to ICD10 and vice-versa.  The program also allows you to enter a CPT procedure codes, and find the common ICD-10 codes that get billed with that procedure code.

Of course Version 21 will also come with built in compatibility with BillFlash patient electronic statement functionality.  This allows you to easily upload your patient statements electronically to BillFlash and let them do all the “heavy” work of printing, stuffing, and mailing your statements for only pennies more than the stamp you are already using.  Physician offices tell us this is a tremendous timesaver, and doctors love the fact that their statements gets out on a regular monthly cycle again!

McKesson Business Performance Services (McKesson), over the past few months, conducted an analysis of their products and services to determine what products fit best with their organization.  After this evaluation, they determined that the Medisoft, Lytec and Practice Choice and Practice Partner products would be better served by a company that focuses more on the individual and small doctor practice market and found a private equity firm , focused on the small doctor practices, that they felt would better serve the Medisoft customers.

“McKesson chose to partner with e-MDs as it is an industry leader, founded by physicians and focused solely on the small- to medium-sized independent physician practice” says Harry Selent, President of MedicalBillingSoftware.com. ” McKesson feels e-MDs is the optimal  Parent Company that would best serve the Medisoft customers” says Selent.

e-MDs is a portfolio company of Marlin Equity Partners (Marlin), which is a global investment firm with over $3 billion of capital. Marlin invests in companies where its capital base, industry relationships, and extensive network of operational resources significantly strengthen and enhance the value provided by its acquired products.  e-MDs is a leading provider of integrated electronic health records (EHR), practice management (PM) software, revenue cycle services, and credentialing solutions for small- and medium-sized, independent physician practices and enterprises.

Medisoft and Lytec are medical practice management and medical billing software programs used to help manage the Revenue Cycle Management of individual and small doctor practices around the country. Practice Choice and Practice Partner are electronic medical and health records software used by doctors and healthcare providers to document patient encounters and track details of patients and replaces the paper charts medical offices have been using.

The purchase agreement with e-MDs includes the Medisoft Value-Added Reseller  channel, which MedicalBillingSoftware.com is a member of, and services many of the doctors and healthcare providers using Medisoft. e-MDs will manage the day-to-day operations of the staff,  and products. The acquisition by Marlin Equity Partners is subject to customary closing terms and conditions, and is expected to be complete in 30-60 days.

Over the course of the next month, McKesson will be working closely with the e-MDs team to plan for the transition of the support and development functions that support these products as soon as the official closing takes place. It is the intention of McKesson and e-MDs to make this transition for the customers as seamless as possible.

McKesson, and MedicalBillingSoftware.com are committed to ensuring a smooth transition for its customers, and looks forward to the future success of its customers with the Medisoft, and Practice Choice Products!

McKesson Practice Focus: Mobile Data Platform Helps Ensure Financial Health Tracking the economic vital signs of a physician practice is critical to good financial health. Fortunately for Pamela Henry, practice manager for Honolulu-based Radiology Associates, Inc., there’s a powerful tool that helps make the job a lot easier.

McKesson Practice Focus Mobile™ is a dashboard-driven informatics platform that allows users to access essential practice data and trends on the fly. Thanks to a combination of advanced, high-speed mobile technology and the power of the iPad®, practice managers like Henry can pull up real-time financial and operational metrics anytime, anywhere.

“With McKesson Practice Focus Mobile, I can look at my current AR, the volume for the month, physician activity; basically whatever I need to know,” says Henry, who’s managed the 18-physician imaging group for 10 years. “It makes it extremely convenient and saves a lot of time.” Henry says McKesson Practice Focus Mobile is especially helpful for assessing financial data after office hours or during board meetings, when partners may have a particular question regarding the group’s performance. “They may want a quick summary of our billing performance or our procedure volume, and it’s all right at my fingertips,” she says.

The data helps the group’s leadership make better decisions about staffing, modalities and equipment purchases. Partnering with McKesson Radiology Associates, Inc. provides both diagnostic and interventional radiology services and is one of the largest imaging practices on the island of Oahu. The group is affiliated with Queens Medical Center, the largest private hospital in Hawaii, and has been in business since 1972. Two years ago, Radiology Associates partnered with McKesson Business Performance Services (McKesson BPS) for revenue cycle management services. According to Henry, the practice chose McKesson on the strength of the company’s track record in radiology billing and the expertise of its billing team. Along with improved collections, reduced denials and stronger cash flow, McKesson also provided the group with improved financial and operational insight via McKesson Practice Focus, a web portal, and its companion mobile application.

Henry says both the desktop and mobile apps help improve strategic planning by providing visibility into long-term trends. The applications allow users to set benchmarks and budgets, and also gain insight by comparing practice metrics against national and regional averages. Other specific capabilities include denial reporting, payer analysis, daily activity by practice location and more.

Tracking Billing Results Just as important, Henry says, McKesson Practice Focus helps the group monitor McKesson’s billing performance. “We need to keep track of how the practice as a whole is doing, and we also must make sure that McKesson is meeting its obligations and responsibilities as our billing provider,” she says. “The ability to monitor their performance on a day-today basis helps create peace-of-mind for the partners, and it also ensures a stronger relationship and better communications with the McKesson team.” “We couldn’t be happier partnering with McKesson, and also with the tools they provide,” Henry says. “McKesson Practice Focus Mobile represents a real breakthrough for us.”

Curious about what a Medical Claim is or looks like?

Medical claims are a printed or electronic document that contains information from a Medical provider, about a patient, regarding the visit or treatment.

The claim is usually printed on a CMS 1500 insurance claim form like the following:

Medical billing claim form

Medical billing claim form

The doctors office usually completes the insurance claim form for the patients and prints and mails it or sends it electronically to the insurance company.  Some medical offices do not submit this form, but instead print a basic “receipt” that has the doctors name and office address; and a list of CPT procedure codes they are billing for, and the associated Diagnosis codes assigned to the patient and the patient must file this with thier insurance company.

Essentials to Staffing a Medical Practice

As a physician setting up a new practice, there are many things to consider before seeing a patient. This includes but certainly not limited to office space, medical equipment and insurance. One of the most important things a doctor must select is the right office staff. This can literally make or break your practice and its reputation.

Well-qualified and friendly employees can enhance the patient experience making them feel welcomed and more apt to refer your services. Staff that is short with patients and not willing to hear their concerns will certainly drive patients away.

The four staff members a physician must have on his team include: an office manager, medical assistant, billing specialist, and a receptionist. Depending on the practice, some doctors may have a need for more than one person for each position. This does not include office manager. There should only be one manager per practice. Typically, an office can run smoothly with these four positions filled.

Office Manager – An office manager is essentially the eyes, ears, and voice of a practice. They oversee the office staff and attend to any situation that may arise. Managers tend to the business aspect of the office so doctors can concentrate on providing the best patient care possible. Many office managers have a nursing background so they are well-versed on both the clinical and business side.

Office managers also assist with billing questions, phone duties, and customer service. A manager is also the go-to person for staff members on such issues such as payroll, sick leave, vacation, and personnel issues.

Medical Assistant – These clinical professionals perform routine medical duties under the direct supervision of a physician. This includes taking, vitals, height and weight, as well as instructing patients about medications and special diets. They also prepare and administer medications, and authorize drug refills as directed. Medical assistants perform many administrative duties like answering telephones, greet patients, update and file patient medical records and forms.

Billing Specialist – This is a vital position in every medical practice. Billing specialists tend to have a background in medical coding and billing. However, many have also received on the job training. Day-to-day responsibilities include submitting claims to insurance companies, and working with insurance companies to get claims processed and paid. They also review denied claims, verify patient insurance coverage, and answer patient billing questions.

Receptionist – A warm, friendly and knowledgeable person usually fills this role. After all, this is most often the first person a patient encounters when contacting a practice. Receptionists are responsible for answering phone calls, checking patients in and out of the office, and initiating the billing process by giving patients the proper forms to fill. They must also have an understanding of how the office flows and have the ability to direct patients where they need to go during their visit.

As you can see, all of these positions tend to wear many hats. It is important to have dynamic individuals fill these positions. It is also important for the physician and office manager to set the tone for quality. Employees that are friendly, willing to be cross-trained and know their positions well, will help create a stable and thriving practice.

Did you know you can prevent a call to medisoft support by following these simple instructions? Here is how to “Customize” certain Medisoft screens when you are looking at tables of data such as the Transaction Entry Screen? Look for the black DOT in upper left corner of a table, click on it, and add or subtract fields of information you want or don’t use. I like customizing the main Transaction Entry screen to include, these additional fields: Guarantor Amount Paid; Adjustment: Claim Number; Ins 1 Paid; Ins 2 Paid; Ins 3 paid; Remainder; and sometimes whether the copay amount or copay amount paid. With todays wide screens, you can get alot of useful data on the screen so that you don’t have to go hunting for it.
Step 1, click on the Black Dot;
Step 2, Click on Add fields;
Step 3, Click and select the feilds you want to add;
Step 4, You might need to modify the column width so that
all the fields fit on your monitor and you don’t have to scroll
to the right to see all of them. REMEMBER, Medisoft uses the WIDEST of the text is typed in, OR the column width. So either
abbreviate the text or reduce the column width, but again, if your text is wider than the column width, Medisoft ALWAYS show all the text, even though the column width might be smaller than the text.
